All of you true golf fans don’t need me to tell you that the 2010 Ryder Cup from the Celtic Manor Resort has been a bit of a mixed bag in terms of the stop-start nature of proceedings to date due to the weather.
I am currently attending the event and shall be bringing you my complete post-match overview on my return to sunny Spain in a couple of days time, so I won’t divulge too much of my experiences to date. Suffice to say that it has been amazing, despite the cruel effects of the weather to try and spoil Sir Terry Matthews sterling efforts to bring the Ryder Cup to Wales. The course and the entire set-up are quite spectacular and really deserved a better showing on the world’s golfing stage.
Bottom line! I blame the ruddy Yanks and their damned Fed-Ex Cup and the lure of the mega dollars on offer. The timing of this circus has resulted in the Ryder Cup being forced to take a back seat in that it has been pushed back around three weeks later than in the past. In four years time we are going to be faced with a similar situation in Glenagles unless someone has the ‘cojones’ to do something about it. (You may want to refer to a Spanish-English dictionary to get this word, although you can probably work it out for yourself!)
Anyway, play is due to restart this afternoon (Sunday) to get the outstanding fourballs and foursomes completed, leaving tomorrow, Monday, to round off the event and therefore retain the integrity of this truly remarkable occasion. As you can probably guess, like many of you, I have been a massive fan of this for so long and now, having had the privilege of attending it, I can’t wait for the final outcome. Let us just hope that Europe can maintain the momentum of their fantastic performances from yesterday afternoon and hopefully, give us a bit of a lead going into the deciding singles. Either way, win or lose, let golf be the winner!
